Icelandic New Energy (INE)
Icelandic New Energy (INE) was founded in 1999. It is owned by the 3 largest utilities in Iceland and the Government of Iceland is also a shareholder along with the University of Iceland. It has a very simple goal: “To eliminate the use of fossil fuel in Iceland”.
Iceland´s energy mix is unique as over 99% of heating and electricity comes from renewable resources. The company’s goal is therefore focused on sectors still using fossil fuel, i.e. land transport, marine applications and aviation.
INE mainly acts as an enabler for new projects utilizing alternative fuels such as battery electric, hydrogen, and any other electrofuels replacing fossil fuels. INE serves as important consultant to the Icelandic government regarding policy steps towards using alternative fuels and deployment of relevant dispensing/refuelling/charging infrastructure. The focus has been on securing government incentives and financial support for new initiatives leading to reduced use of fossil fuels. The role of municipal and regional governments has been less focused as their capacity and resourced are limited. The RECET project is therefore an important platform to strengthen these ties and help, specifically, rural governments to better prepare for the energy shift already ongoing. To be able to implement such activities in a safe, speedy, and organized manner needs a coordinated action between, national, local, financial, and industrial stakeholders.
The RECET project can create a bridge and support the successful implementation of alternative fuels. INE has extensive experience in creating and designing, participating in, and coordinating clean energy initiatives over its 20+ years of operation. INE has coordinated several EU, Nordic and national projects all aiming to increase the use of alternative fuels. The focus is on solutions, be it direct electrification or by using alternative electrofuels such as hydrogen, methanol, ammonia, etc. Furthermore, INE has been responsible for dissemination and communication tasks of diverse activities on a local, national and regional level.
