Westfjords Regional Development Office (WRDO)
Westfjords Regional Development Office was founded on 1. December 2017 with combination of Municipality Association of the Westfjords and Westfjords Regional Development Agency. Under WRDO are also Marketing and Cultural Offices of the Westfjords that manage the tourist www.westfjords.is and support number of cultural events in region.
The purpose of WRDO is to work towards interest of inhabitants, municipalities, institutions, and companies in the Westfjords. Providing comprehensive consultation and service related to regional development, entrepreneurship, and culture. The objective is to enhance business in area, promote inhabitant welfare and strengthen the area as an investment option for people and business. Working on cooperation between industry, regional and national government, and support institutions towards this objective. In energy related matters, WRDO has analyzed energy needs and availability of energy in the Westfjords, in cooperation with OV, the local energy company and Blami, the initiative for energy transition projects in the Westfjords.
WRDO has been a diligent advocate for energy security and adoption of sustainable energy production in the Westfjords. In April 2022 the national government issued an energy policy for the Westfjords, a policy that makes our participation in this project possible, where the national government commits to securing delivery of energy to region. In energy transition we are working with the rural farming municipality of Reykholar, who are committed to become a sustainable and carbon negative community, on constructing a circular economy industrial park.
Participation in RECET is an important project to acquire knowledge and experience for energy transition, to be a part of a learning curve that will benefit our disperse and rural communities. WRDO has been successful in its objective of working with local industry and its municipalities and has been a key facilitator for growth in aquaculture and tourism. Energy is an issue of great importance for us, prior EU project gave valuable experience and insight into energy sustainability. We look forwards to be an active participant in the RECET project and implementing alternative energy solutions in the communities of the Westfjords.
